Celebrate International Women’s Day 2024 with Fitness World

Who run the world? Girls! On March 8th, join Fitness World as we celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) – a global recognition for women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements.

We honour this day by celebrating how far women’s equality has come and by advocating for women’s rights in all areas of life, including home, recreational, and work environments. International Women’s Day serves as a reminder and an inspiration to continue to work towards creating a world where gender equality is the norm. Let’s go girls!

Fitness World is an inclusive gym who hypes body positivity, focuses on mental health, and supports a safe environment for all our gym-goers. We even have clubs that feature dedicated women-only spaces! Read on to learn about the International Women’s Day 2024 theme and how Fitness World is working to inspire inclusion in fitness.

What is This Year’s IWD Theme?

Every year, a different theme is chosen to raise awareness about specific issues that impact women. For 2024 the theme for International Women’s Day is inclusion, #InspireInclusion. The #InspireInclusion theme emphasizes the importance of inclusivity and focuses on creating spaces where women feel valued, included, and empowered. All of us at Fitness World believe in creating safe and inclusive spaces for all, both at our gyms and in our daily lives!

Celebrate the women in your life by acknowledging their successes, supporting their goals, and ensuring they feel respected and included in every aspect of society. That’s right, hype up your gals! You can also be an ally, someone who supports, learns, and advocates for women. Allies can support women’s achievements, push for gender equality, and create spaces—like gyms—where women feel safe, wanted, and included.  You can count on all our Fitness World locations to be a safe and friendly place for all women to achieve their goals.

Inspiring Inclusion at Fitness World Canada

Fitness World passionately supports inclusion, especially in the fitness space. We believe in creating a welcoming environment for everyone at all of our locations. We recognize the importance of comfort and safety and are proud to offer dedicated spaces that cater to those who prefer a more private setting or a women-only area. Fitness World isn’t about honouring women one day a year – we’re here celebrating them every single day.

You’ve heard enough from us, now it’s time to showcase the amazing women and allies in the Fitness World community! Today, they share their stories of how fitness has changed their lives, goals for the future and leave us with powerful words of advice. Happy International Women’s Day from all of us at Fitness World!

What makes Fitness World a great place for women to workout?
We have so many incredible, strong, and welcoming women who workout in our spaces. Seeing the same girls in my spin class every week, seeing girls using the heavy weights and platforms, it all confirms that this is a space for them, and a space for me.

What’s something that fitness has given to you or added to your life?
Fitness has always been a really important way for me to balance my mental health. It’s an hour of me-time to just move, let go of any stress, and the endorphins are pretty good, too!

What goal do you have for yourself?
To become a spin instructor! I have loved taking classes for so long, I think it’s time to get on that lead bike.

Any advice you want to provide to women everywhere?
Trust in yourself that you can do whatever you put your mind to, regardless of any negative inside or outside voices that might try to get in your way. In the words of one of my favourite TikTok’ers, “how hard can it be… boys do it.”

What makes Fitness World a great place for women to workout?
Fitness World is inclusive and welcoming! I remember feeling so uncomfortable lifting weights in the gym in the early 2000’s. It felt like the cardio section or group fitness room was the only place women belonged. Fitness World has done a brilliant job of integrating all types of modalities within one workout space, which makes everyone use all part of the facilities. The representation of all genders amongst the staff empowers women to feel comfortable and confident in the gym, empowering us to use EVERYTHING FW has to offer.

What’s something that fitness has given to you or added to your life?
It literally SAVED my life! I am blessed to have fitness a part of my lifestyle (and my job!). When I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 37, the only two things my oncologist asked me to do were: exercise & not smoke. I couldn’t image trying to build the habit of exercise while undergoing chemotherapy. Since I was already in the habit of lifting weights and doing cardio, it was easy for me to integrate exercise while being treated. This allowed me to get through the treatment much easier and with no complications. My biggest learning: don’t wait until you’re sick to get healthy. Being healthy now will save you if an unexpected health issue comes along. It’s the best preventative medicine, even when you don’t know you’ll need it!

What goal do you have for yourself?
My goal is to consistently maintain a well-rounded wellness program including lifting weights 4 times per week, sleeping well nightly, remaining spiritually aligned, and keeping my mental health in check. At this point in my life, exercise and wellness goes far beyond a physical goal, it’s mental and spiritual.

What woman inspires you the most?
My mom… she was a legend. I strive to be like her in all the positive ways she lead me throughout my life. She instilled self-worth and self-confidence in me as a young child. I believe I can achieve anything because of her. I hear her voice anytime I’m winning or losing, and I want to be that same voice of encouragement for the other women in my life.

Any advice you want to provide to women everywhere?
Be loud! Demand your voice is heard because you have great things to say and share. We are the most brilliant people on this earth; others deserve to be touched by our ability to emotionally connect, our strong intuition, our open minds, our creative ideas and our ability to solve problems with care and grace. If we don’t speak up, we can’t help build others into their greatness!
