All About the 2025 RUNVAN® First Half Marathon

As race day approaches, we’re counting down the days to support runners, volunteers, and spectators at one of Vancouver’s most celebrated running events. The annual RUNVAN®  First Half Marathon, known as Canada’s Fastest Half Marathon, is set for February 9, 2025, and begins at 8:30 AM. The course offers breathtaking views as runners follow an out-and-back route past Sunset Beach, along the Seawall, and through Stanley Park before finishing at the historic Roundhouse Community Centre in Yaletown.

With a cap of 2,000 runners, this event has become a vital part of the city’s vibrant running culture. Originally organized by the Pacific Road Runners and now part of the RUNVAN® family, the First Half Marathon is a premier training race for Vancouver’s only Marathon in May. Fitness World is proud to contribute to the energy and excitement of this spectacular event. Get ready for a day filled with good vibes and high-fives as we run together to celebrate fitness and community!

Training Secrets for Every Runner: From Rookies to Veterans

For many runners, the First Half Marathon is the perfect way to prepare for larger events like the BMO Vancouver Marathon. Whether you’re tackling your first race or you’re a seasoned runner, we’ve curated some helpful tips to support your training and recovery journey.

Indoor Race Training vs. Outdoor Marathon Training

Weather can play a big role in your training. While outdoor runs help prepare you for different conditions, having a safe, dry indoor space is essential for staying consistent. Fitness World’s spacious clubs offer everything you need—from treadmills to strength equipment—to keep your training on track regardless of the weather. Our functional training areas and Olympic lifting platforms are perfect for building strength and endurance.

Optimized Tapering for Peak Output

Long runs are important, but strategic tapering before race day is key. Fitness World’s trainers can help you reduce your training volume gradually, ensuring you arrive at the starting line rested and ready to perform your best.

Maximizing Results with High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

Add variety to your training with shorter, intense workouts to build speed and agility. Fitness World offers HIIT classes and group cardio sessions to help you sharpen your race-day performance.

Foam Rolling and Stretching

Training for a half marathon can take a toll on your muscles. Incorporate foam rolling and targeted stretching to relieve tension and improve flexibility. Fitness World’s yoga classes and recovery tools, like Normatec and HydroMassage chairs, can help you stay loose and ready for race day.

Prioritize Rest and Recovery

Recovery is just as important as training! Stay hydrated, prioritize sleep, and take rest days to let your body heal. Need extra recovery support? Fitness World’s Cool Down Zone at the First Half Finish Line will offer Hypervolt Recovery Sessions and plenty of space to stretch to help you relax and rejuvenate after your run.

Race Day Tips for a Successful Performance

After all your preparation, race day is your time to shine! Here are some last-minute tips to ensure you have a smooth and enjoyable experience:

  • Gear Up: Wear tried-and-true gear—avoid new outfits or shoes on race day. Opt for moisture-wicking materials to prevent chafing.
  • Fuel Smart: Stick to foods you’ve tested during training. The night before, eat a balanced meal with carbs and protein, and stay hydrated.
  • Plan Your Race: Study the course map and water station locations. Coordinate with friends and family to cheer you on from key spots along the route.
  • Stay Positive: Visualize your success and enjoy the energy of the day. You’ve trained hard—you’ve got this!
